The E-Z Split Key Cup

By John Horton, Multimedia Specialist

Over the past few years, the availability of point-of-care (POC) drug testing has grown exponentially. POC testing has provided medical professionals the ability to obtain an accurate test result within minutes of specimen collection outside of a clinical laboratory. There has been a number of drug tests that have come and gone, but the best ones stand the test of time. One of those testing devices is the Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup. What makes this test stand out the most? It’s hard to say with all the features and options available. That’s why we’d like to take this time to explain this sophisticated device to you in great detail so you can make a better judgment for yourself.

As a quick glance-over, some of the attractive features include how it can screen for 3 to 12 different drugs of abuse (depending on your needs), the unique key activator that lets you begin testing at your convenience, a reserved split-specimen in case you need to have additional confirmation testing, and the fast test results in under 5 minutes. Not only will you get a reduction in turnaround time with this test, you can also clearly see the specimen and its temperature strip. Depending on the configuration, you may be able to get it CLIA Waived and you can choose to have an integrated adulterations test to check for Creatinine (CR), Glutaraldehyde (GL), Nitrate (NI), Oxidants/PCC (OX), ph (PH), Specific Gravity (SG). On top of all that, they are FDA 510(k) Cleared!

The Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup is, without a doubt, a very durable and tough device that would be great for transporting the specimen from one place to another. It’s designed for convenience, making it the perfect test for both men and women to use. With its two separate chambers made of a hard plastic and a hinged, leak-proof lid, the design prevents donor manipulation and the tester doesn’t have any contact with the specimen because there is no dipping, tilting, or touching. You could think of it as the drug test made to fit around your convenience with a shelf-life of up to 24 months! Now reading all that may sound like using the E-Z Split Key Cup is a bit intricate, but it’s quite the opposite. Basically, all you have to do is:

  • Collect the specimen and snap the test lid shut (you will hear a loud “click” sound)

  • Technician then dates and initials the security seal before attaching it over the closed lid

  • Place the testing device onto a flat surface to obtain the most accurate result possible

  • Insert the key (provided on the lid) into the hole on the side, then turn to activate the test

  • Finally, peel off the label to reveal the results (and specimen validity if available)

  • After 5 minutes, you’ll have your accurate results (not dependable after 60 minutes)

See, it’s that easy and when you’re finished, the results can easily be photocopied for patient records and reporting procedures to compare with any discrepancies or inconsistencies that may arise in the future. The results are generally visible, especially if the urine test results come back negative for drug abuse. The important thing to remember is that should the test results show a false-positive or false-negative result, the urine sample remaining can be poured into a new cup for retesting. This testing device can detect up to twelve commonly abused drugs:

  • Amphetamine (AMP = 1,000 ng/mL or AMP 300 = 300ng/mL)

  • Barbiturates (BAR = 300ng/mL)

  • Benzodiazepines (BZO = 300ng/mL

  • Buprenorphine (BUP = 10ng/mL

  • Cocaine (COC = 300 ng/mL or COC 150 = 150 ng/mL)

  • Ecstasy (MDMA = 500 ng/mL)

  • Marijuana (THC = 50ng/mL)

  • Methadone (MTD = 300 ng/mL)

  • Methamphetamine (mAMP = 1,000 ng/mL or mAMP 500 = 500 ng/mL)

  • Opiates (MOP = 300 ng/mL or OPI = 2,000 ng/mL)

  • Oxycodone (OXY = 100 ng/mL)

  • Propoxyphene (PPX = 300 ng/mL)

  • Phencyclidine (PCP = 25ng/mL)

  • Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA 1,000 ng/mL)

Just so you know, the cutoff levels are standardized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, also known as SAMHSA. When you see the results, they will have either a single line or no line at all. You should always check for a line in the control section (C) before looking at the rest. If a line appears, then the test was successfully completed. Now you can move onto the next box (T) to see if it shows a line (negative) or if the line is left blank (positive). Even if a faint line appears in the test section (most cases THC), it’s still a valid line and means negative.

It’s important to know the frequently used adulterants. Many abusers believe that if they use certain house hold or proprietary chemicals to alter drug screen results, it will help them pass a drug test. The truth is that the only way to actually pass a drug test is to stay clean. Another important thing to remember is that many of these chemicals have similar ingredients, although they differ in the amount. Some examples used to “cheat” a drug test are liquid soap, sterile eye drops, powdered bleach, acetic acid, gluteraldehyde, and sodium nitrate. Many of these tricks are detected as adulterants by the Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup, should you choose that option.

The Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup is favored heavily by care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, and specialized clinics (particularly those that deal with pain management) along with emergency departments in hospitals. A big reason for that is because these tests have the option of being CLIA Waived. Under CLIA regulation, they define a laboratory as “a facility that performs testing on materials derived from the human body for the purpose of providing information for diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of any disease or impairment of, or assessment of the health of, human beings”. In order to be considered as “CLIA Waived”, a facility has to commit to several things, such as:

  • Enroll in the CLIA program by obtaining a certificate

  • Pay the certificate fee every two years

  • Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for the waived tests you are performing

  • Notify your state agency of any changes is ownership, name, address, or director within 30 days, or if you wish to add tests that are more complex; and

  • Permit inspections by a CMS agent, such as a surveyor from your state agency. However, your laboratory is not subject to a routine survey or inspection.

Granted, someone has to pay for the drug testing procedure, but who foots the bill for it? This is where some employers get confused and try to put off drug testing as long as possible. If you are already CLIA Waived, then know about the reimbursements available. That will definitely knock off some of the tab for you, if you qualify. For those employers who don’t qualify, no need to be worried. The best part about drug testing is that it doesn’t have to be expensive, especially when it comes to the Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup. You won’t find any more convenient, user friendly and cost effective POC device.

According to SAMHSA, an employer normally pays for a drug test. This also including the time spent having a required drug test since it’s generally considered hours worked (and thus compensable time) under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) regulation, for employees who are covered by the Act. If you are in the transportation industry, looks like the employer pays the cost. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), “the employer is responsible to make sure that the Medical Review Officer (MRO), first laboratory, and second laboratory perform the functions in a timely manner once the employee has made a timely request.”

As an employer, if you ask the employee to pay for some or all of the cost of testing, and the employee is either unwilling or unable to do so, you must ensure that the test takes place even if you have to pay for it yourself. Here at Rapid Detect, we’ll save you money and help make ever dollar count. No matter if you order the Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup from us at our regular price or when we have it on sale, when you place your order, you will get:

  • Enroll in the CLIA program by obtaining a certificate

  • Pay the certificate fee every two years

  • Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for the waived tests you are performing

  • Notify your state agency of any changes is ownership, name, address, or director within 30 days, or if you wish to add tests that are more complex; and

  • Permit inspections by a CMS agent, such as a surveyor from your state agency. However, your laboratory is not subject to a routine survey or inspection.

The Integrated E-Z Split Key Cup is a drug test like no other, unique in its own way. It is for in vitro diagnostic use only and includes several features that will make taking a urine test a breeze.
